HISTORY OF A (TRUE) FAKE
This book-inquiry is as much a collage as it is a groping experiment, and it brings together two stories and two unusual destinies: that of a pirate edition of Aragon's Traité du style, originally published in 1928 by Gallimard and long out of print when Gérard Berréby (éditions Allia) relaunched an illegal print run of this text at the end of the 1970s, leading to a lawsuit for counterfeiting and violation of intellectual property; on the other hand, archives relating to duplications and reproductions of Duchamp's Fountain, collected and compiled in the compiled in the Fountain archives by the artist Sâadane Afif since 2008. By borrowing documentation, reproduced and juxtaposed, relating to these two cases around the notion of art, legitimacy / reappropriation, intellectual property and reproduction / falsification, the author thus creates a meta-book that is at once a work in its own right; an erudite and ironic commentary and a new level of reading around these themes. Produced by the artist Philippe Munda, this book parodies and mischievously borrows the layout of the NRF publications.
